A few years ago I was a part of a church split. Yep, rather than preserve unity we parted ways. I know this has little to do with technology, but it’s been on my mind this week.

Nearly 10 years later

With the benefit of hindsight and some personal growth in Christ, I’ve decided that I would do things differently if faced with a similar situation. The reason is that most of the people I’ve talked to who were a part of that church split have told me that their faith was deeply rocked by that event. Often it wasn’t immediately, but not too long after the church that claimed to love Jesus tried to lock opposing groups out of the building people started doubting this Jesus that both groups preached.

Several of these people decided they never wanted anything to do with Jesus or church again. Some of these folks are open to following Jesus, but not interested in church. Others, like me, went through some tough times but are following Jesus in the local church today. The point is this.

Preserve Unity in a church at all costs

Today I’m thinking that in that same situation I would have to volunteer to resign and be the “fall guy.” I could get over people blaming me or spreading lies about me – but I cannot get over the reality that my decisions caused others to question their faith in God. It’s something that I’ll have to live with forever. No matter how “right” one side is, anytime a church splits, it breaks the commands in Phillipians 2:4ff

Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
    he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him
    and gave him the name
    that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Please don’t try and prove someone wrong, or stand on your principles. Preserve unity in the body of Christ, even if that costs you something.
