  • Counters the F.C. Baur school of thought popular at the time of his first edition. He does it with a good argument for the dating of the Gospels and Acts, even if some of his argument on the Synoptics is out of favor now (the Aramaic priority stuff).
  • Succinct presentation of many facts


  • So succinct that it lacks much detail, especially debate with his detractors
  • Some chapters, like the one on miracles, are quite weak.
  • His knowledge of Josephus is out of date, as is most of the work.
